Travel & Accommodations

We have worked out discounted rates with multiple hotels in the area! Feel free to book with one of the following hotels below. If these do not work well with your budget/preferences/needs, there are plenty of hotels and airbnbs in the area that might work better! If you are planning to book elsewhere, I’d recommend staying in Ensenada, El Sauzal or Valle de Guadalupe. (Keep in mind that currency rates are constantly in flux; therefore, conversions to USD are estimates and may vary based on when you decide to purchase.

TRAVEL TIPS

We’ve gone ahead and put together a few different options at different price points. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to tony or I, and we can try to help you figure out the best travel plan for you and your family.

By land: If you’re trying to keep travel costs as low as possible, we recommend driving down. This is the least expensive option but keep in mind that it is a far drive and that traffic can get pretty bad depending on the time of day you leave. The best time to leave is around midnight the night before, you should get into Ensenada by mid to late morning with the least amount of traffic as possible.

By air: Ensenada does not have an international airport, so you have the choice of flying into Tijuana or San Diego. Please make sure to have Real ID(if flying domestically to San Diego) or a passport book (if flying into Tijuana) Please note that the passport card will only work by land (i.e., driving or walking across) or by water, NOT by air, therefore if you choose to fly direct into Tijuana airport, you would need a passport BOOK). We advise against flying into Tijuana, as tickets are 2-3x more expensive, but this is an option if you don’t mind the cost.

If you decide to fly to San Diego, you have several options for getting across the boarder.

  • Rent a car. This will also be helpful for getting around town once you’re there. Keep in mind they will not let you rent larger SUVs going into Mexico, smaller sedans only. Also, there is an additional insurance you will need for international coverage (~$35USD per day). It is not offered when booking online, so just be aware that it will get added on to the final price once at the car rental location. You will not be asked for your passport if driving into Mexico, but you will need it to come back into the U.S., so do not forget it.
    • When driving, make sure to take the “Cuota” aka their newer highway, which is the FASTEST route to Ensenada. It does have 3 toll booths along the way, and will accept both dollars and pesos as payment, (roughly $15-20 total round trip or less). I wouldn’t recommend trying to skip the tolls. The only other way to Ensenada is about twice as long (~3hours) and is not worth it.
  • Walk across (Be prepared to show your passport card or passport book)
    • From the airport, you can Uber/Lyft to the border crossing (~$30-35USD)
    • If you want to save money, you can use San Diego Metropolitan Transit System(their Muni) which will pick you up in front of the San Diego Airport and take you to a trolley which travels to San Ysidro, steps away from the boarder. (~$5USD). From there, you can walk across into Mexico.
  • Once across…
    • There are buses that take you from Tijuana into Ensenada but these take a couple hours and we have not personally taken this route. So we do not know how easy it is to find a way to/from the bus station but plenty of other tourists do this option.
    • You can also arrange with other friends and family to pick you up at the boarder if they have driven or rented a vehicle for the weekend!

Note for those driving into/back from Mexico, upon coming back…

  • Lines back into the states will be long, so we recommend giving yourself extra time to drive back into the country, especially if you have a flight home from San Diego Airport. Wait times at the border can range anywhere from 1.5 hours to 6 hours depending on what time you leave. Also keep in mind that Ensenada is about an hour and a half from the boarder. Be sure to have enough gas to stand idle for a couple hours if necessary. And make sure to leave with plenty of time to make your flights back home. There is a website that monitors wait times at the boarder. https://bwt.cbp.gov/
